Can a Facebook Account Be Kept Private From Unknown People?
Facebook's security settings allow you to specify which sections of your profile are visible to friends, extended friend networks and the general public. Select the visibility options that suit your needs, including hiding your entire profile from people you don't know. Navigate the settings menus to keep your account secure.
-
Privacy Settings
-
Access the Privacy Preferences page from the Account menu. Click the link to customize settings below the "Sharing on Facebook" section. Choose the "Friends Only" or "Only Me" options in each section, including the things you post, your personal information and the things your friends post. Select the option to return to the privacy settings when you finish the changes.
'Connecting on Facebook' Settings
-
Click the "Customize Settings" link in the "Connecting on Facebook" section. Select "Friends Only" in each of the sections, or choose "Customize" to select "Only Me." This restricts search results, friend requests and your profile visibility accordingly, blocking your account from anyone you don't choose to see it.
-
'Apps and Websites' Settings
-
Click the edit link under the "Apps and Websites" section to set the visibility and access for applications on your Facebook page. You can restrict applications so that they're unable to access your profile or any accompanying information. Click "Edit Settings" beside the public search section and clear any check mark in the "Enable Public Search" field to prevent your profile from appearing in any Web search results.
Considerations
-
Restricting your account to visibility to you and your friends will prevent anyone not on your friend list from seeing your account. If you want to add someone new to your friend list, you must send a request, as she won't be able to access your profile listing until you do.
