What AC Units Fit Horizontal Sliding Windows? thumbnail
Window units are designed to easily fit vertical sliding windows.

Although a window unit air conditioner is designed to easily fit inside of a vertical opening window, it's possible to install a unit into a horizontal sliding window. A portable air conditioner unit features a component called a window slider that fits perfectly into both vertical and horizontal windows. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Dimensions

    • Before purchasing an air conditioner unit for a room, it's important to measure the space between the windowsill and sash with the window completely open, especially if you're thinking about getting a window unit. The window unit must be small enough to fit into the window with enough workable space on each side to install the unit properly. A portable air conditioner unit is more versatile in the way of installation than a window unit, as the portable unit features a window slider component that accommodates a horizontal sliding window.

    Window Unit Installation

    • When installing a window unit in a horizontal window, a few fundamental installation techniques still apply as with vertical window installation. The unit must be secured to the window and outside wall to prevent the unit from falling out with the supplied V-support brackets, screws and a screwdriver. L-brackets should be used after the V-support brackets are installed to fasten the window shut. As with a vertical window install, the L-brackets should be fastened to the corners of the open window to prevent the window from opening any further. A piece of plywood or similar material can go above the air conditioner to seal off the open space between the window frame and the AC.

    Portable Unit Installation

    • A portable unit is easy to install in a sliding glass window of any direction. The window slider component that comes supplied with the unit extends out or narrows inward to fit the diameter from the top to bottom of the horizontal window frame. Once the slider is adjusted, install it in the window and slide the open window over to lock it into place. The exhaust hose attaches to the hole in the window slider component and to the back of the portable unit. L-brackets must be installed at the top of the window to prevent opening, as with the window unit installation.

    Sealant

    • Weather seal strips seal any openings created upon installation of an air conditioner unit. To tighten the seal between the portable unit window slider and the window, peal the back of two pieces of weather seal and press a piece to the windowsill and sash before inserting the window slider. A piece of weather seal can be inserted at the bottom of the window underneath the unit and in the spaces between the plywood and the unit to prevent air leakage.
