Paint a sky on the ceiling of a teen's bedroom that transforms from day to night.

Teenagers tend to know exactly what they want, from their wardrobes to outrageous and creative bedroom themes. Paint the teen's bedroom to envelope her in nature using a night-and-day theme in a way that best suits her interests and personality. The walls can simply hint at nature or literally span from night to day across the room. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Colors

    • Choosing a paint color is a big deal, as the walls cover the largest area in the room, making a huge impact. The colors on the walls can actually affect your teen's mood, as different people react to colors differently. Narrow the color choices down to a few basic ideas, particularly different shades of blue to mimic the sky. Paint test spots on a portion of each wall, or paint a foam board so you can move it around the room. Observe at the room at different times of the day and night to see how the color will really look in the room. Ask the teen to live with the color on his walls for a couple of days before making a final choice.

    Day to Night

    • Paint a mural on all four walls to represent different times of the day. Use the same image on each wall, such as a picket fence, trees and bushes. Paint how the scene looks at sunrise on one wall, in the middle of the day on the next wall, at sunset on the third and the middle of the night on the final wall. The clouds can appear to move across the scene throughout the day, if you paint them in a slightly different position on each wall.

    Glow in the Dark

    • Paint the walls a medium blue shade that appears to get darker as the day goes on. Include a few clouds, especially on the ceiling. Use glow-in-the-dark paint or decals to add the moon, stars, comets, satellites, planets or whole galaxies that are only visible in the dark. The room will look like daytime during the day, yet create a star-gazing scene when your teen turns off her lights.

    Layering

    • Use the entire wall to create a scene from the morning until night. Start on the bottom of the wall with a color that makes you think of dawn, perhaps painting the sun starting to come up in the corner of one wall. Use a blending technique to paint layers of blue that get darker the higher you go, representing the day turning into night. You can paint the sun setting in the opposite corner of the room from the sun rising, if you want to add that detail. Use a beige rug on the floor, and paint the ceiling to look like the night sky, if you want the full effect.
