What Kinds of Permanent Markers Are There?
Permanent markers come in handy when you do not want ink to come off of a surface. Non-permanent markers can come off a surface when it gets wet or you wipe it off with a cloth. You can find permanent markers to use for hard surfaces, presentations and fabrics. In addition, some brands are available in a variety of colors. Manufacturers design permanent markers for projects where you want the ink to last. These types of markers work well when you need to label files, address boxes and you are in need of a general-use permanent marker at home, office or school.

General Use
-
General use permanent markers come in a host of vibrant colors. These markers are approximately the size of a writing pen, but the width of the marker of 1/2 inch. This type of marker has the capability to write on wood, cardboard, paper and non-porous surfaces including glass, steel and iron.
Dry Safe
-
Dry safe permanent markers are similar to traditional general use markers. However, unlike regular general use permanent markers, you can leave the cap off the marker for up to two weeks, depending on the brand, and the marker's ink does not dry out.
-

-
Many people think of a regular writing pen when it comes to retracting. However, some manufacturers make retractable permanent markers. You can clip this type of marker to your pocket for safekeeping. By pushing the mechanism at the top of the device, the tip pops out for writing. When you push the button again, the tip slides back inside the body of the permanent marker.
Fine Tips
-
Sometimes you need a writing instrument that produces fine or thin lines. For example, labeling the spines of books, plastic file folders or plastic folder tabs requires a thin small line for writing. You can find retractable, dry safe and other fine tip writing instruments that are refillable in a retail store.
Recyclable
-
Some retailers carry recyclable permanent markers. Depending on the brand of the marker, some manufacturers produce recyclable permanent markers using 50 percent or more recycled materials. These types of markers come in the same colors as regular permanent markers. However, these markers can have a higher price than traditional permanent markers.
