Edison Dehumidifier Runs Hot

Edison Dehumidifier Runs Hot thumbnail
Many dehumidifiers contain replaceable air filters similar to an air conditioner.

A dehumidifier reduces indoor humidity in damp rooms, such as laundry rooms and basements. Modern models can run for a long time without needing service or repair, requiring only that their water catches be emptied daily. When a dehumidifier runs hot, be it an Edison model or any other, eliminate some potential causes before taking the unit in for professional servicing. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Clogged Air Filter

    • Many dehumidifiers contain an air filter on the intake side of the unit. Before air is passed over coils filled with coolant for condensation accumulation, it is passed through a filter to remove dirt, hair and other debris. If this filter becomes clogged, the dehumidifier can have difficulty pulling in air for dehumidifying, causing an accumulation of heat. If your filter is reusable, clean it thoroughly as per its instructions; otherwise, replace the filter.

    Dirty Coils

    • Dehumidifiers dehumidify by passing indoor air across copper coils filled with cold refrigerant gas. Water accumulates on these coils in much the same way condensation accumulates on a cold glass of water in a hot room. Over time, particles in the air can stick to the coils and cause less copper surface area to be exposed to the air. This reduces the efficiency of the unit and can lead to overheating.

    Clogged Water Filter

    • Many dehumidifiers contain water filters in addition to air filtration. These filters are on the output side of the condensation pan and help remove impurities from the water before it is passed down the drain pipe and dumped into the catch basin. Ensure this filter is clean and kept clear or replace it per the instructions in your model's user manual.

    Edison Dehumidifier Recall

    • Some Edison dehumidifiers have been recalled due to potential fire hazards. The model is the EMD40 model, in white or beige. If you suspect you have a recalled model, check the serial number located behind the water catch and see if it matches up with the recalled models.
