Graduate scholarships are sometimes called fellowships or merely grants.

The more education you obtain, the greater your odds of finding a high-paying job --- especially if you plan on becoming a teacher. But until you earn your PhD, you most likely will be struggling to find enough funding for your education. Scholarship and grant opportunities become even more competitive after undergraduate school, meaning you must work harder to win money for school.

  1. AAUW Schoalrships

    • The American Association of University Women (AAUW) has a variety of grants and fellowships designed specifically for women pursuing graduate studies. The AAUW awards a $20,000 fellowship to women working on their dissertations and a $6,000 grant to current college faculty and scholars who are engaged in short-term research. To qualify, you must be a female U.S. citizen who has demonstrated scholarly excellence and who is dedicated to improving the lives of girls and women.

    Gates Millennium Scholars

    • The Gates Millennium Scholars program strives to help underrepresented minorities obtain higher degrees in many fields of study, including education. To qualify, you must demonstrate financial need, be a U.S. citizen and be a member of a minority ethnic group. The amount of your award will vary depending on the extent of your financial need, as well as the cost of tuition, fees and other expenses at your school.

    Ford Foundation Fellowship Program

    • The Ford Foundation offers a $20,000 annual fellowship to female PhD candidates who intend to teach at the college level upon graduation. This fellowship also requires that you intend to use diversity to enrich the education of your students. Candidates must be enrolled in a research-based program leading to a PhD, demonstrate high academic achievement and not already have a doctoral degree. Also, according to the Ford Foundation's judgment criteria, membership in an underrepresented ethnic group will weigh very positively on your likelihood of winning this fellowship.

    Federal Student Aid

    • Like scholarships, federal grants are free money that students can use to pay for school. Though the government doesn't typically give money to graduate students, it makes an exception for those in education. This program is called the TEACH grant, and it awards up to $4,000 each year to students who sign a contract to teach a high-need subject in a low-income area after graduation. You must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, and you must agree to teach in your low-income area of choice for at least four years during the eight years following your graduation.
