What Is "Domain Masked Redirect"?

What Is "Domain Masked Redirect"? thumbnail
Web pages sometimes mask their real address.

Sometimes on the World Wide Web, the owner of a Web page needs to divert visitors to a different Web page. This is called a redirect. The usual reason for redirecting visitors to a different page is that the company name has changed and so has a different Web address, or the website was reorganized and so the required page is in a different location. Domain masking is a little different to redirection.

  1. Redirection

    • The benefit of redirection is that the user and the user's browser know and see the new address to which they have been forwarded. The address of a Web page is called a URL. This means Uniform Resource Locator. It includes a domain name, a directory path, a file nameand optionally parameters required by the file. A domain name is the name of the Web site and is usually something like "www.website.com." The owners of the old website want visitors to see the new website name to which they have been redirected so they know to use that address next time they visit the page they were seeking.

    Masking

    • Masking has two levels: domain masking and URL masking. Domain masking also performs URL masking. URL masking does not necessarily perform domain masking. The method involves showing the content of one site or page in a different page. If users go to a site using masking, they type in the masking site's address in their Web browsers.

    Masking Example

    • The site "www.masking.com." only contains one default Web page. It exists only to show content from "www.content.com." While the user sees a page of www.content.com, the URL in the address bar of the browser remains as "www.masking.com." If the masked page contains a menu structure, as the user moves around the site of www.content.com, the address in the address bar remains www.masking.com. URL masking enables one page from the same site to be shown at the different address of the same site, or several pages of a different site to be displayed at the same address. This technique helps shorten long URLs. To save a user typing and address like "http://www.bigco.com/dig/dir/dom/dag/products/i49.htm" The website can have a URL of "http://www.bigco.com/i49.htm" that displays the content of the page held at the longer URL.

    Method

    • The Web page at the masking address contains a frame, or a panel filling the entire page. The frame/panel points to a different page. So, when the first page is delivered to a Web browser, it immediately sends a request to the address given for the page filling the panel or frame. The second page may be on the same Web server, or a different server. When that page is delivered, the browser fills in the frame, or panel, so everything the user sees is actually from the second Web page, although the address of the first Web page remains in the address bar.
