What Does Hijacking Mean for Computers?
A hijacked computer means that it is under someone else's control. When hijacked, your computer can send out spam emails, install other programs automatically and change your Web browsing links and homepage. While this would simply seem annoying, another aspect of the hijacking includes possible thievery of your personal data and information, including passwords, Social Security number and bank account information.

Symptoms
-
Symptoms of a computer or browser hijack involve changes to your computer's files and sudden pop-ups, usually for adult oriented pornography sites. Your computer may also slow down suddenly, or offer new bookmarks and in your browser. New programs and toolbars may suddenly appear, and your computer may redirect your browser to a completely different site than selected.
Cause
-
Computer hijacks typically occur thanks to hidden programs called malware. This includes adware, spyware and other virus-type software that download and install themselves without your permission. Sometimes these programs hide within other freeware downloads, but malware program writers often take advantage of the "holes" and security issues found in other software programs and operating systems. In essence, the malware slides in through a "backdoor" of sorts. Once on your system, it settles in to invade your computer's safety and security.

Solution
-
You should have an anti-virus, anti-malware program installed and current on your computer at all times. When you experience strange actions on your computer, run your protection program to seek out and remove known malware. In cases of extreme malware infestation, you may need to actually restore your computer by using "System Restore," or even completely reformat your system.
Prevention
-
The best line of defense against malware is keeping all your programs, including your operating system, current in their updates. Microsoft Windows offers constant and regular updates to help patch the known vulnerabilities found in its programs and operating system. Use care when downloading any freeware programs from the Internet, as many possess these hidden dangers. Do not allow any program to install itself on your computer unless you know what it is and specifically requested it to install yourself.
