Before you embark on your homemade boxer shorts project, determine what you hope to accomplish with your gift. If you really want to roast the old timer and think he can handle it, go all-out with your design. Otherwise, you really need to think about determining a certain level of taste that won't run the risk of upsetting the gift recipient. If you plan to give him boxer shorts in the first place, it's likely you're close enough to make a good lighthearted joke about the half-century number. However, even if you're close with the recipient, you need to consider how the gift might make him react.

You'll need a pair of boxers to work with before you can begin customizing them for the occasion. Determine the gift recipient's pants size to figure out what size of boxers to work with, or make the size part of the gag by giving him a grossly oversize (or undersize) item. If you're really handy with a needle and thread, consider making your own pair of boxer shorts from a quality fabric; you could do this free form or could use a pattern as a guide. Otherwise, just pick up a pair of basic boxer shorts from the store; these can be any color or pattern you like, but the plainer they are, the more room for creativity you'll have.

Incorporate a clever slogan into your design; this could be something to do with getting older, becoming a senior citizen, or some other generic aspect of aging, or you could incorporate a more personal joke into the boxers for extra humor. Again, this is an area where you'll have to consider your taste level as boxer shorts have a lot of potential for crossing a raunchy line. Examples of a possible slogan could include "Your back goes out more than you do."

Incorporate other custom bits into your boxer shorts using decorative materials like paint, glitter or sequins; the more over-the-top the design, the funnier the finished product will be. In fact, you could forgo a slogan and simply create a big, sparkling "50" on the backside of the pair of boxer shorts. Other ideas besides incorporating an embellished "50" could include images of commonplace products used by the elderly, like dentures, walkers and canes.
