Make your own soft frisbee for hours of safe entertainment.

Tossing a frisbee around is a classic pastime for all ages. It provides an entertaining outlet for exercise that requires very little skill. Frisbees come in all different shapes and sizes, and they can be made from a variety of materials from hard plastic to soft foam. Making a soft frisbee at home can save you a few dollars, and it can provide you with an entertaining craft activity on a rainy day.

  1. Advantages of Soft Frisbees

    • Aside from being economical, homemade soft frisbees have a variety of advantages over the classic plastic frisbees available in stores. A soft frisbee poses much less risk for bumps and bruises that could occur as a result of contact from a faulty throw. It also prevents damage to personal property. These factors make soft frisbees ideal for public use -- even if you miscalculate the aim of the frisbee and it lands in someone's picnic, you'll cause much less of a nuisance than if you'd used a hard frisbee.

    Gathering Materials

    • You won't need many materials to make your soft frisbee, which makes this project fairly inexpensive to complete. Paper products are probably the easiest and most accessible medium you can use to craft your disc; whether you use a simple paper plate base or get a little more complex with your sheet paper folding skills, there are a variety of options. Experiment with different materials, from cardboard to foam, and discover what works the best for you. The only other materials you'll need to construct the frisbee are things like scissors, glue, staples and decorative items like paint, markers, glitter and sequins, depending on how or if you plan to decorate the frisbees.

    Choosing A Size

    • You can make your frisbee in a variety of different sizes, so decide how large you want the design to be before you gather your materials. If the soft frisbee is meant for small children, consider downsizing the scale of your design to make it easier for little hands to catch and throw. If you want to make a frisbee that meets up with the average dimensions for manufactured frisbees, use a compass to outline an eight-to-10-inch circle on top of your material. Or, skip the sizing issue by using paper plates as your bas. These are already ready to go.

    Making and Using Your Frisbee

    • The key to creating a successful flying disc is to cut a hole in the middle, leaving you with a ring shape. This makes catching and throwing easier, and it makes the frisbee more aerodynamic. If you chose to use the simple option of paper plates as your base, simply cut a slit in the center of the plates to start removing the inner circle. Then, put the plates together so the bottom sides face outward. Staple these together, and then decorate them for some extra personality. Create games to play with your frisbee, or simply throw it around with the family in the backyard.
