The beautiful shades of the tropics add flavor to your reception.

Whether you're taking a cruise to the tropics or exchanging vows in your own town, bring the bright, luxurious feel of the tropics to your reception. Tropical colors evoke warmth and natural beauty, ranging from aqua blue to coral. Incorporate tropical colors in a way that matches the overall tone and style of your reception.

  1. Flowers

    • Richly hued flowers bring an instant tropical atmosphere to your reception. Many native tropical flowers are brilliantly colorful; create centerpieces out of orange African tulips, blue jacaranda blossoms, yellow heliconia and vivid purple dendrobium orchids. As an alternative, use flowers that grow closer to home, but choose tropical shades. Coral-colored roses, red chrysanthemums and bright blue daisies offer a playful tropical look while keeping hometown charm. For a personal touch, leave a colorful blossom on each guest's plate.

    Table Settings

    • At most wedding receptions, table settings provide a focal point for your guests. For a tailored tropical look, use crisp white tablecloths, accented with vivid green table runners. If possible, use table runners with a fern or palm leaf motif. Arrange bright tropical fruits, such as bananas and oranges, against the table runners. Alternatively, use table linens in aqua blue, mint green, bright yellow or coral. Accent the bright tablecloths with simple white flatware and bamboo candleholders.

    Lighting

    • Use tropical colors in your lighting for increased ambiance. Arrange basic white votive candles in colored glass candleholders; for instance, alternate orange, purple, blue and red candleholders for a festive tropical glow, in the evenings or indoors. Instead of colored candleholders, use colored candles. Arrange tropical shades of tea lights around your reception venue, or float colored candles in large glass bowls filled with water. Paper lanterns in pink, aqua and purple create an ethereal look.

    Decorations

    • Bring your wedding cake to life with tropical colors. Arrange freshly cut orchid blossoms against white frosting for a pop of color. Fuchsia, red-orange or yellow blossoms add vividness to any wedding cake; the same shades are also suitable for fondant lacework. Hang aqua blue tulle and streamers for a festive look that evokes the feeling of ocean waves. Create garlands of simple paper flowers in alternating tropical colors, reminiscent of leis, and hang the garlands from the ceilings.
