What to Use to Make a Pyramid Craft?

What to Use to Make a Pyramid Craft? thumbnail
Ancient Egyptians built pyramids.

A square pyramid, such as the pyramids of ancient Egypt, has a square base and four triangular sides that meet at their points, or the apex of the pyramid. Multiple materials prove useful when making a pyramid craft. Heavier or thicker materials make a stronger pyramid, but since a pyramid is a strong shape on its own, a pyramid may be made from thin paper as well. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Sugar Cube Pyramid

    • Create a simple mortar by mixing 1 egg white and 1½ cups of confectioner's sugar to use for a sugar cube pyramid. Make the base of the pyramid to contain 10 rows of sugar cubes with 10 cubes on each row. Use the mortar to attach the cubes. For each subsequent layer, decrease the number of rows and cubes in each row by one until the pyramid is topped with one cube. Mix red, yellow and blue food coloring and water in a spray bottle to make a brownish tint and lightly spray it on the pyramid to make it look more like the pyramids of ancient Egypt.

    Paper Pyramid

    • On a piece of paper, draw a square and four equilateral triangles coming off the end of the square. Cut out the shape. Fold each triangle along the edges of the square to create the walls of the pyramid. Tape the walls together. If desired, leave one side of the pyramid open and decorate the inside of the pyramid to look like the inside of an ancient Egyptian pyramid. Use watercolors, markers or crayons to decorate the outside of the pyramid.

    Popsicle and Papier-Mache Pyramid

    • Form a square by hot gluing four Popsicle sticks together. Use hot glue to create four equal-sized triangles from the Popsicle sticks. Spread hot glue along one edge of the square and attach a triangle. Continue until all triangles are attached. Add glue where the edges of the triangles meet and at the tip of the pyramid. Mix 1 part glue with 1 part water to create a papier-mache paste. Dip strips of newspaper into the papier-mache paste and layer them around the pyramid (except for the bottom), making sure to cover the empty spaces between the sides of each triangle. Add at least three layers of papier-mache to the pyramid. Once it has dried, use craft paint or poster paint to decorate the pyramid.

    Clay Pyramid

    • Roll a piece of brown modeling clay into a ball approximately the size of a softball. Press the ball on a piece of cardboard or other flat surface so that its bottom becomes flat. Mold a small point at the top of the ball. Use a knife with a non-serrated edge to slice the ball on four sides at an angle to form the shape of a pyramid. With your hand, lightly shape the pyramid where necessary to make sure the sides are straight and corners are pointed. Use a toothpick to make the outside of the pyramid look like stone or brick. Allow the pyramid to air dry.
