Working as a singer may sound like a simple job. But a lot of effort goes into rehearsing and performing a song well. Besides just mastering a song, a singer may have to travel to perform in front of live audiences. However, the responsibilities of a singer vary based on the type of singing career they choose to pursue.

A singer is responsible for learning the lyrics of the songs he will perform. He should take into consideration the audience he will be performing for when choosing his songs. For example, if the singer performs in the choir of a church he would choose very different music than if he were performing in a nightclub. Not just song choice, but the style in which the songs will be sung should be determined. He uses his knowledge of voice production, harmony, melody and rhythm to delight listeners of all ages.

Whether the singer is the lead singer, a member of the group or a backup singer, rehearsals should be taken seriously. After various rehearsals, the songs may be recorded. Singers are responsible to arrive on time and work until the song is recorded as desired. Singers who perform in Broadway shows or sing opera spend hours practicing songs that may include acting or dance routines.

Singers pursuing a successful career need media exposure. They need to take advantage of every opportunity to shine on TV, radio, live performances and movies. As their careers grow, they will work closely with an agent or manager who will represent them and schedule them for live performances and appearances. Many singers decide to pass on the gift of music by becoming music teachers. To teach in schools, music teachers need a bachelor's degree in music education and a teaching certificate. Others decide to give private singing lessons.

While natural talent is an essential factor, a singer needs to constantly hone singing skills through study. Professional schools and private voice lessons help in this regard. A high school student who would like to pursue a career as a singer should take advantage of choir and drama courses. Participation in recitals, plays and choruses also help prepare for life as a singer.
