What Kind of Paint Is for Enamel?
Vitreous enamel, also known as porcelain enamel, is a thin layer of glass fused onto metal surfaces at a high temperature, and is commonly used to finish kitchen appliances, sinks and bathtubs. It has a glossy finish and is resistant to wear and tear. Enamel surfaces, however, can become scratched or discolored over time, making it necessary to replace or repaint them. You can paint over enamel using a specialist paint containing chemical resins that make it tougher, although a good quality oil-based gloss paint effectively covers enamel tiles. Enamel paint, which is more resilient than water-based paint but doesn't have the same properties as vitreous enamel, can also be used to paint enamel appliances. However, this type of paint won't be as durable and stain-resistant as paints specifically designed for the job. Does this Spark an idea?

Enamel Tiles
-
You can paint over porcelain tiles with an oil-based gloss or semi-gloss paint. Begin by applying an oil-based primer paint, preferably in the same color as the gloss paint. When applying the base coat, first go over the tiles' perimeter with a brush, then apply the primer to the tiles with a good quality roller. Apply a second coat of primer when the paint dries. Go over the entire area with sandpaper when the second coat dries to remove imperfections on the primer's surface. If you are painting the grout in a different color, apply masking tape to the tiles before painting the grout lines. Apply the gloss paint when the primer dries, filling in the edges with a brush before covering the tiles with a roller. Thinly apply multiple layers of paint rather than thick coats because this will last longer. Wait until the gloss dries before adding another layer.
Enamel Paint
-
Enamel paint should not be confused with vitreous enamel, or porcelain. Enamel paint
has a hard surface that makes it more durable than water-based paints, and a high-gloss finish. To cover enamel-painted surfaces with a water-based paint, wash the surface thoroughly with warm soapy water and remove the gloss with sandpaper. Apply one coat of acrylic sealer undercoat as an adhesive for the new paint. Once it dries, apply two coats of the new paint.

Enamel Tubs
-
You can repair small chips in a bathtub with enamel paint or epoxy-based paint, which contains chemical resins and hardeners and gives a ceramic, stain-resistant finish. Porcelain paint, designed for touching up bathtubs and other enamel surfaces, gives a hard, glazed finish and is usually stain resistant and designed to withstand high temperatures. Invest in a bathtub refinishing kit if you plan to repaint the whole tub. These come with cleaning solutions, spray guns, primer and surface paints. It's essential to keep the room well ventilated and to protect yourself with a ventilator, gloves and safety goggles, and to follow manufacturer's instructions to the letter when using epoxy-based paints and bathtub repair kits because they contain strong chemicals.
Appliances
-
Porcelain paint and appliance paint can be used to cover up chips and scratches on enamel appliances, such as stoves, fridges and dishwashers. These sometimes contain epoxy and give a hard, long-lasting finish. Some are designed to be used on heated surfaces, such as ovens and stoves. Appliance paint comes in a range of colors. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully because appliance paint and porcelain paint contain strong chemicals.
