The State of Wisconsin boasts numerous academic institutions, both public and private. Students living in Wisconsin can avail of the many scholarship opportunities open to Wisconsin residents to help finance their education. For dependents of city workers in the state, there are additional scholarships available.

  1. Educational Associations

    • Students who are dependents of public school employees in Wisconsin are eligible for scholarships offered through the union Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC). It offers four scholarships annually to high school seniors who are dependents of a WEAC member, active retired member or whose parent died while a WEAC member. Eligible applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA, be in the top 25 percent of their class, attend a four-year college to pursue a degree in education and intend to teach in Wisconsin after graduation. The award amount as of 2011 is $1,450 per year for four years.

    National Unions

    • Municipal employees can benefit from national union membership for support and advocacy. In addition, many large unions provide scholarships for dependents of members. The American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME) has 1.6 million members in the U.S. with 3,400 local unions. The union offers several scholarships, including the Union Plus Scholarship for AFSCME members and their families. The award is granted to undergraduate or graduate students attending an accredited college, university, community college or trade school. As of 2011, the award amount ranges between $500 to $4,000.

    First Responders Scholarships

    • Dependents of first responders have numerous scholarship opportunities available both at the state and national level. The Wisconsin Electronic Security Association (WIESA) advocates for the alarm system and electronic protection industry as stated on the organization's website. The association offers a scholarship to high school seniors who are dependents of full-time employees of police, sheriff or fire departments. Dependents of administrative staff employees are not eligible. Applicants are selected based on GPA, ACT scores, extracurricular activities, academic achievements and a personal essay.

    State Employees

    • Those working for cities in Wisconsin as state employees can avail themselves of the Wisconsin State Employee Union for scholarship opportunities. The union is a local affiliate of the AFSCME. The union awards eight Jim Boyd Memorial Scholarships annually to union members and their dependents. As of 2010, award amounts range from $4,000 to $1,000 and are granted on either a one-year or two-year basis. The scholarship has been awarded to 133 students as of 2009 and is supported through the Jim Boyd Memorial Bowling Tournament.
