What Is the Salary Range for Casting Directors?
Casting directors can make or break a film project. They are largely responsible for determining which individuals are cast for certain parts in movies, plays and other types of productions. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were a total of 83,520 producers and directors employed in the Untied States in 2010 across a wide variety of industries. The average salary for casting directors and other directors nationwide was $88,610 per year in 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The highest paid directors made salaries that exceeded $166,000 per year, while those at the low end of the pay scale made $32,140 or less. The median salary for those in this field reported by the BLS was $68,440, while those in the middle 50 percent of the pay scale earned salaries that ranged from $45,470 to as high as $111,720 annually.

Who casting directors and other directors and producers work for provides some indication of what they can expect to make in terms of annual salaries. According to the BLS, the highest paid professionals in this field were actually employed in the accounting and bookkeeping field, making an average of $121,940 per year. Motion picture and movie industry directors averaged $109,860, while those in the field of advertising and public relations brought home $105,600 on average. After the motion picture industry, the second largest group of directors and producers worked in television and radio broadcasting, making an average salary of $72,030 per year.

The BLS indicates that the highest average salaries were earned by those working in the state of California who made $126,360 per year in 2010, on average. New York was second in terms of average salary with a reported average pay for directors of $111,930. Only the District of Columbia came close to the salaries earned in these two states. Directors in D.C. earned an average of $90,820 annually.

Despite stiff competition for jobs in the video and motion picture industry, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 11 percent job growth by 2018 in this field, over and above the number of jobs reported by bureau in 2008. According to the bureau, much of the overall job growth will be due to higher demand for American-made films abroad.
