The BLS reports that these workers earned a mean annual salary of $46,060 as of May 2013. The hourly pay came to about $22.14. Annual incomes ranged from $27,420 a year or less for the bottom 10 percent of earners to $72,350 a year or more for the top 10 percent. Location plays a part in how much you might earn in this position. For example, the BLS reports that child, family and school social workers averaged the highest salaries in New Jersey, at $62,380 a year as of May 2013. In California, the average pay was $49,820 a year. In Texas, it was $39,610.
Adoption counselors provide social services and assistance to both parents and children. They help parents with the adoption process and also help to find foster homes for abused or abandoned children. The average salary varies, depending on factors such as experience and location.
