The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics includes adoption counselors under the broader job category of child, family and school social workers. The BLS reports that these workers earned a mean annual salary of $46,060 as of May 2013. The hourly pay came to about $22.14. Annual incomes ranged from $27,420 a year or less for the bottom 10 percent of earners to $72,350 a year or more for the top 10 percent. Location plays a part in how much you might earn in this position. For example, the BLS reports that child, family and school social workers averaged the highest salaries in New Jersey, at $62,380 a year as of May 2013. In California, the average pay was $49,820 a year. In Texas, it was $39,610.
