Decoupage your photos instead of putting them in frames.

Decoupaging photos is a simple way to add a personal touch to furniture or other craft projects. Use your favorite photos to cover an end table, a wall canvas, wooden coasters or trays. Decoupaging is an inexpensive project that is not difficult to do.

  1. What is Decoupage?

    • Decoupage is basically gluing paper to an object. The paper or photos are applied in thin layers and covered with the decoupage medium to give it a clear protective layer. This is a great way to dress up an old item or finish a craft project. Decoupaging is a project that beginners can easily do. Use photos for a very personalized decoupage project.

    How to Decoupage

    • Cut your photos to the size you want. Spread a thin layer of decoupage glue onto your surface. Lay the photo on top and smooth with your fingers; you do not want any wrinkles or bubbles in the photo. Allow the glue to dry completely. Once dry, cover the photos with another layer of decoupage glue. Allow to dry, then apply another layer. You will want to cover the photos with at least three layers of decoupage glue to ensure they are protected.

    Using Original Photos

    • If you can't bear the thought of using your original copy of a photo, make a copy at a photo center to use. You can also scan in your photo and print it on regular copy paper or photo paper. Once you cover it with decoupage, it is impossible to tell if it was the original photo or not. You can also upload a photo to an editing program and add words or special effects to the photo before printing it. Change a photo to black and white or sepia tones for an old-fashioned or classic look.

    Craft Ideas

    • Small coasters are perfect for putting photos on. Trim down a photograph to a 4-inch by 4-inch square and decoupage it onto a piece of wood or tile. Make an entire set for a gift. Wooden trays also make cute decoupaged crafts. A large one sitting on the table or ottoman can take the place of several photo frames, yet serve a practical purpose. A desk, table or dresser can be personalized with photos on the top; it is also a great way to change the look or cover bad spots on it. Treasure or trinket boxes, glass jars or even lamp shades can be decoupaged with photos.
