An unspoken compliment can be an unexpected gift for any friend.

Making others feel good about themselves is an important part of being a loyal and devoted friend. If your friend needs a pick-me-up, an effective compliment can make her smile, feel better about herself and feel warmly toward you. Learn the different ways to sincerely compliment and you'll gain appreciative friends and even feel good about yourself.

  1. Be Vocal About It

    • Everyone enjoys being recognized for something positive, and your friend is no different. If you know it wouldn't make her uncomfortable, draw attention to an accomplishment or piece of clothing of hers. Wait until you're in a group and say, "Jane gave a killer presentation at work this morning. I don't know how she always manages to be so put-together and prepared." Or, you could say, "Jane, you look gorgeous. I wish I had your fashion sense." That gives your friend positive recognition without her having to call attention to herself.

    Write a Note

    • If your friend is uncomfortable receiving compliments in person, a quick note will make him smile and enjoy the positive feelings in private. If he's a coworker, write a message on a sticky note and put it on his monitor: "You always have the best ideas. So glad to have you on my team." If it's a holiday or special occasion, get him a card and write, "You have a great attitude, enviable organizational skills and make the best coffee ever. You deserve a happy holiday!"

    Recognize Efforts

    • When your friends work hard, noticing their efforts is one of the most rewarding things you can do for them. If a friend has lost weight, tell her how amazing she looks and ask for her secret. If a friend cooks for you, don't spare any compliments in describing the excellent presentation, texture and taste. You don't have to lie -- sincerity is an important part of compliments -- but you do need to show you understand how much work was required to produce the finished product.

    Imitate

    • Imitation is the best form of flattery, so take a cue from your friends and they'll be flattered. Ask a coworker friend to show you his method of writing the weekly report; say you're struggling with it and know he can provide excellent guidance. Ask a fashionista friend to accompany you on a shopping trip and give you advice. Tell her she has the best fashion sense you know and you really need some help in that department. Don't worry about taking up your friend's time; most people are glad to help once they realize they're seen as an expert.
