Wear a black hood to frame your skeleton face.

If you have decided to dress as a skeleton to go trick-or-treating at Halloween a good alternative to wearing a mask is to create a skull face with makeup. You will be amazed how quickly and easily you will be transformed with just two colors of face paint -- black and white -- and you will be ready to go out spooking in no time. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Gather Supplies

    • Use a good quality brand of face paint as it will be easy to apply and you will be able to achieve even coverage. Assemble a soft makeup sponge, a dish of water and some soft brushes of different sizes to work with. Place a towel over the front of your clothes or costume to protect it. Do not apply face paint to broken or sensitive skin. Do a test on a small patch of skin before applying the face paint as a precaution.

    Preparation and Base

    • Tie long hair back away from your face so it doesn't get in the way. Dip the makeup sponge in some water to moisten it. Squeeze it out so that it is damp, but not wet. Load one side of the sponge with white face paint. Start at the forehead and work down over the whole face, applying a coat of white paint as evenly as possible. Reload your sponge when necessary.

Cover the whole face, apart from the eye sockets.

    Add Shading

    • Clean the sponge and load it with black paint. Apply black paint to the eye area, covering the eyelids and following the natural contours of the eye sockets. Use the damp sponge to blend and soften the edges of the sockets, so there are no hard edges and the black fades to gray and then white. Use a brush to fill in small areas around the eyes. Lightly apply black paint to the temples and the hollows of the cheekbones to create gray shadows. Blend the color softly with the sponge.

    Add Details

    • Use the brushes to add fine details. Load a brush with black paint and add two teardrop shapes to the center of the nose. Draw a thin black line horizontally across your lips where they meet. Add teeth using fine black lines to draw tooth shapes above and below the line. Use white paint to add highlights and define the tooth shapes. Draw some very fine cracks on the forehead and cheeks to make the skull face look more ancient.
