Dead Worms Behind Drywall

A variety of pests hide behind drywall and remain there until they escape or die. Two common pests found behind drywall include cabbage palm caterpillars and foreign grain beetles. Both of these insects enter the home accidentally, but begin feeding on drywall once they inhabit homes. Keeping these pests out is the key to controlling insect infestations. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types

    • Foreign grain beetles are common new house pests, especially in homes built during the summer months. These beetles are red or brown and measure 3/32 inches in length, which is quite small. Cabbage palm caterpillars have been known to chew through drywall to feed on the insides of walls. These insects live outdoors on cabbage palms and other trees or shrubs. The adult form of cabbage palm caterpillars are small moths, which do not damage the plant. Mature cabbage palm caterpillars measure 1 1/2 inches in length and are pink with black spines on their body.

    Effects

    • Worms often migrate indoors to reproduce and become trapped on the inside of walls and die. Foreign grain beetles usually feed on fungi and molds, not on grains or plants. Fungus growing on the back side of drywall often attracts these pests. Cabbage palm caterpillars often come indoors to reproduce, entering through torn window screens and cracks on the home. These caterpillars are attracted to light and are known to chew through fiberglass and drywall to gain access to homes.

    Cultural Control

    • Removing dead worms from behind drywall is not usually necessary, as these pests are small and do not cause a foul odor after death. Keeping insects out of your home can help reduce infestations of worms. Caulk all areas on the outside of your home that provides insects with easy access to your home. Place tight-fitting screens on your windows and on door thresholds to keep insects outdoors where they belong. Remove any dead worms you find inside your home and use proper sanitation techniques to prevent reinfestations.

    Considerations

    • Foreign grain beetles are attracted to homes when moisture levels are high. Repair all sources of excess moisture inside your home, such as leaky pipes or ceiling tiles. Predatory insects living behind drywall can also feed on worms such as foreign grain beetles and cabbage palm caterpillars. New homes that have excess moisture when being constructed often see foreign grain beetles and these insects are problematic until the house dries out, which may take several weeks or months.
