An E1 Error on a Calypso Dryer
The Whirlpool Calypso line of clothes dryers, no longer manufactured by the company, was a series of dryers with options such as a towel-specific setting, settings for casual, delicate and heavy-duty cycles, as well as touch-up and rack dry features. The dryer has an electronic window for status information and error messages. One such error message is that of the "E1" error. If the E1 error code appears, owners will want to perform some troubleshooting to see if they can resolve the problem before calling Whirlpool for repair service. A simple malfunction will mean you won't have to enlist a technician to fix the problem. Does this Spark an idea?

Thermistor Error
-
Most likely, the E1 error indicates a problem with the dryer thermistor. The thermistor is on a circuit that will cause an error code if the circuit is open or shorted. The E1 error usually means the circuit is open.
Ambient Temperature
-
It is possible for ambient temperatures to cause problems with the thermistor, although the temperatures would have to be extreme for this to occur. If the ambient temperature is below 18 degrees Fahrenheit, the E1 error will occur. Do not operate the dryer in very cold temperatures; move the appliance to a warmer location if necessary.
-
Overheating
-
The Calypso dryer may malfunction if internal temperatures exceed 250 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature in the dryer seems to be very hot, disconnect power and contact Whirlpool for assistance. Do not attempt to repair or come in contact with the dryer, as injury may occur.
Testing and Repair
-
Skilled homeowners may be able to access the thermistor by removing the bottom access panel and then testing the thermistor with an ohmmeter. Normal resistance for the thermistor should be between 9.2K ohms and 15.3K ohms. If the value is higher or lower than these values, replace the thermistor. Note that a professional should conduct this test and repair in most instances.
