The Importance of a Computer Keyboard
One of the most visually identifiable parts of a computer, as well as the most important, is the keyboard. While its sister device, the mouse, allows for quick and easy navigation and interaction, the keyboard goes beyond the simple "point and click" interface to allow for more intricate manipulation. Without the keyboard, many actions and programs would become impossible to use, requiring work-arounds or alternative input methods.

The most common computer keyboard has 101 keys, including the entire alphabet, number keys 0 to 9 and directional arrow keys. Other styles of keyboards are available, including ergonomic versions that allow a more natural hand positioning while typing and keyboards specifically for game players with additional keys for manipulating game controls. Keyboards are available with corded or wireless connections, roll-up and laser styles and even with a braille overlay for those with visual impairments.

When used in conjunction with additional Internet programs such as email or instant messenger software, keyboards allow users to interact and communicate directly with others, be they next door or on the other side of the planet. A blog allows users to give voice to their opinions, experiences and knowledge by writing regular posts for others to read. Offline, word processing programs such as Microsoft Word allow the user to create text documents for work, school or pleasure.

Computers require software and specialized instructions to perform tasks properly, and computer programmers write these instructions, called computer code or language, using keyboards. Many different computer programming languages exist, including JavaScript, C++ and Perl. Each language utilizes its own special format and verbiage, but all require alphabetic commands to give the computer instructions. Computer programmers use keyboards to write line after line of detailed, complicated code to tell the computer what to do and when to do it.

In addition to the convenience of having every letter of the alphabet at your fingertips, keyboards also possess special keys for quick and easy access of files and commands on your computer. The numbered F keys at the top of your keyboard are known as the function keys, and each one performs a different action depending on which program you're using. F1, for instance, almost universally opens the Help screen. Each key performs a different task, or no task at all, in different programs.
