Candied apples are more sophisticated than "Fun Size" chocolate bars.

Halloween is often considered more a holiday for children than adults, and the sweets that are heavily indulged in tend toward the low-end, mass-produced commercial variety. However, you can put a more upscale twist on Halloween fare with Halloween-themed gourmet desserts.
Candied apples are more sophisticated than "Fun Size" chocolate bars. Add this to my Recipe Box.

  1. Candy and Caramel Apples

    • The classic Halloween treat can be upgraded for a more gourmet palette. Make your own with high-quality, imported caramel or try commercially available varieties by Ms. Prindables or DeBrito's, which experiment with exotic flavors like hot tamales. Amy's Gourmet Caramel apples is another high-end variety and uses homemade caramel from scratch.

    Chocolates

    • Instead of buying the usual brands and varieties of chocolate, go with something more gourmet, such as Godiva, available at a local confectioner or high-end grocery store. Other gourmet chocolatiers, such as L.A. Burdick, sell fancy, innovative Halloween-themed candies, like spiced pumpkin truffles.

    Truffles with "Candied Brains"

    • If you're a skilled chef, you can try this recipe for white chocolate truffles with candied walnut brains. According to Figs With Bri, you can make the truffle skulls from a mold, using bittersweet dark and white chocolate. The "brains" are made by dipping walnut halves into pink candy melt and placing them atop the skull.

    Black and Orange Chocolate Ganache

    • Chocolate ganache is a gourmet dessert similar to mousse. The technique is rather sophisticated but the ingredients are simple: just cream and semi-sweet chocolate. Use dark chocolate to bring out the black of the Halloween color and top with caramel glaze or orange candied sauce.
