Pirate costumes can be made quickly and inexpensively from old clothes.

A pirate costume is one of the easiest costumes to put together from items you already have at home in the closet. With a little imagination, you can quickly turn an old shirt and a pair of pants into an outfit your young would-be pirate will be proud of. Add a few simple accessories and the costume will be complete. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Pirate Pants

    • Make a pair of pirate pants from an old pair of sweat pants, jeans or colored pants. Cut off the legs below the knee, snipping the fabric into jagged points. It doesn't matter how roughly you cut off the fabric. An old pair of striped pajama pants would also be ideal. Tie a brightly-colored scarf around your waist as a sash.

    Pirate Shirt

    • An old T-shirt or long-sleeved shirt can be customized in the same way to look like a pirate shirt. A striped shirt would be ideal. Cut the hems of the sleeves to jagged points. Consider wearing a double-layered shirt; have a bright-colored shirt under a plain black shirt. Make large slashes in the front of the black shirt to let the color underneath show through. Cut a vest from an old shirt or jacket, removing the collar and sleeves. Glue gold trim to the edges of the vest with fabric glue for a more fancy pirate outfit.

    Hat and Shoes

    • Make a pirate hat from black construction paper. Cut a skull and crossbones from white paper and glue to the front of the hat. Alternatively, wear a bandana tied at the back of the head. Pirates often went barefoot. If that is not an option, customize a pair of dark shoes or sneakers with a large gold buckle. Cut buckle shapes from cardboard and paint them with gold acrylic craft paint. Stick them in position with Velcro tabs.

    Accessories

    • An eye-patch is the essential pirate accessory. Cut one from black felt or craft foam and thread it on to a thin piece of elastic to hold it in position. Alternatively, draw one on with black face paint. Use face paint or eyeliner to add a beard, mustache or stubble. Make a sword from cardboard and paint it silver or gold with acrylic craft paint. If you have a toy parrot, pin it to your shoulder with safety pins.
