Lunch Vs. Dinner Wedding

Serving dinner at your wedding reception isn't the only option that you have to feed your guests. You can also opt to have a mid-day wedding and host a lunch reception afterwards. Every couple is different, and so it should be expected that their styles will vary when it comes to hosting their wedding reception.

  1. Cost

    • If you're trying to cut costs, a lunchtime wedding can help you to save money. Lunch is typically cheaper to serve than dinner, so it will cost you less money to feed each guest. People also tend to drink less alcohol during the day, so you will probably save money on your bar tab. Afternoon weddings can be very classy, but those held in the evening are the most elegant and traditional. Most couples opt to serve dinner at their wedding receptions.

    Timing

    • Plan your wedding ceremony appropriately to the meal that you're planning to serve your guests at the reception. For example, if you are serving guests lunch, don't start the reception at 4 p.m. Guests will be expecting dinner, as this is closer to dinnertime than lunch. If you dream of having a late afternoon wedding ceremony, then you must serve your guests dinner. If you're fine with holding your ceremony in the early afternoon hours, serving lunch at your reception makes sense.

    Evening Plans

    • If you have an evening wedding, serving dinner, your reception will obviously last for the remainder of the day. You won't have to think about what to do with yourselves or your guests for the remainder of the day, because you will all be at your reception. For a lunch reception, you will be able to have your evening free, if you so desire. This leaves time for you and your spouse to depart for your honeymoon, or spend more time with your guests at another location.

    Out-of-Town Guests

    • Consider your guests when deciding whether to have a lunch or dinner reception. If you have a lot of out-of-town guests coming, a lunch wedding might be an inconvenience for them. They might have to come into town a day early to make it in time. If the majority of your wedding guests live relatively close to the wedding site, a lunch wedding will be perfectly convenient for them.
