Power ISO Tutorial

When it comes to accessing files or installing programs, few things can ruin your day quicker than losing an installation CD or a disc with information on it. However, using Internet tools, you can salvage the situation. PowerISO, a CD image file editing program, allows you to work with virtual CD images to create file packages that act like CDs on your machine, and work even when your physical disc can't be found.

  1. Identification

    • PowerISO is a computer application available for download online that can perform a variety of functions using virtual CD image files, or ISO files. An ISO file is a digital file that stores the same information as a physical CD. This image file can be virtually "mounted" to your computer and run just the same as a CD placed in the disc drive would. PowerISO can create, mount or extract ISO files on your machine.

How to Mount ISO Files With PowerISO

    • After users have clicked on the PowerISO icon on their desktops, they can click the "Mount" button on the PowerISO toolbar to bring up the image mounting menu. Users can then click the option labeled "Mount image to drive" to open a file browsing menu. In this menu, a user can navigate to the location of the ISO file on their hard drive and click on it. Once selected, users can click "Open" to mount the ISO file using PowerISO.

How to Create ISO Files Using PowerISO

    • On the main screen that appears after clicking on the PowerISO desktop icon, users can click the "Add" button to begin creating a custom ISO file. Then, a user can click "Add File" or "Add Folder" to add data stored in single files or entire folders to the list of information that will appear on the created ISO. Once finished selecting files to use in the ISO file, users can click "Save" on the toolbar or click "File," then click "Save" to create their ISO.

How to Extract ISO Files Using PowerISO

    • Sometimes, users may wish to extract the files stored in an ISO image file to use independently of the ISO itself. Users can launch PowerISO and then click "Open" to begin this process. Users can then locate the ISO on their hard drive, select it and click "Open" again. Once the ISO is open in the PowerISO screen, users can click "Extract." At this point, users will have to select a destination folder on their hard drive to send the files extracted from the ISO.
