Clown Hat Craft

Make a clown hat to coordinate with a clown costume.

Create a clown hat craft to enhance a Halloween costume, as a craft activity at a circus themed event or just for fun. Clown hats come in a variety of styles, shapes and colors. These hats can be created out of a wide variety of materials, many of which can be found in a standard craft box or around the house.

Cone Hats

Some clowns wear a cone shaped hat similar to a party hat. Use a cardboard party hat as the base for a clown hat. Use paint to add balloons or smiley faces to the hat. Use hot glue to attach colorful pom-poms around the base and at the point of the hat. Other embellishments include sequins, stickers and buttons. You can also make a cone hat by rolling paper into a cone shape and stapling it closed. Then trim the excess paper and decorate.

Top Hats

Buy and embellish a top hat or create your own. Use an empty oatmeal cylinder to create a hat. Cut a donut shape out of cardboard to serve as the brim of the hat. Glue it onto the cylinder. Use paint to color the hat a bright color such as yellow or red. Paint large five-petal flowers on the hat or cover it with images of balloons in a variety of colors. Also consider gluing the head of a silk flower to the hat for decoration.

Jester's Hat

Make a jester style hat out of construction paper. Cut a headband out of construction paper to wrap around the wearer's head. Then cut at least five long, narrow triangles out of various colored construction paper. Glue the wide end of the triangles to the inside of the headband. Glue a jingle bell or pom-pom to the point of the triangle. The triangles will bend over the headband and will flop down to look like a jester's hat.

Other Clown Hat Craft

Any type of hat can be turned into a clown hat. Create a clown hat out of a baseball cap by painting the hat a bright color and adding various types of pins to the front. Another hat to use is a fedora. Tie a colorful scarf around the hat and pin a large flower to it to turn it into a clown hat.
