Fairy Costume Ideas for Adults

Fairy Costume Ideas for Adults thumbnail
Use images of fairies from books as inspiration for your costume.

Fairy costumes are not just for children, as adults can have just as much fun wearing wings and glitter. Create a nymph costume using items from your own closet as well as accessories purchased from costume supply stores. Make the costume as revealing as desired or come up with a specific theme for your fairy costume, such as an evil fairy or woodland sprite.

  1. Dark Fairy

    • Create a dark fairy costume by pairing a black corset with a short black tulle skirt, though a black leather skirt will also do. Purchase a pair of black fairy wings from an online costume store and wear long, black hair extensions in addition to your regular heap of hair. How you want to style your hair is up to you -- try wearing a partial updo with hanging pieces that are curled and crimped. Pile on the black mascara, line the eyes with black liner and sweep black eyeshadow over the lids. Leave the cheeks bare and paint the lips with red lipstick. Use red glitter over the decolletage. Wear black or red fishnets and chunky black heels.

    Water Fairy

    • Pay homage to the Lady of the Lake, a fairy from Arthurian legends, with this water fairy costume. Pair a short blue sundress with light-colored or light blue fairy wings purchased from an online costume shop. Wear opaque tights with ballet slippers or other slipper shoe, and cover all bare skin with silver and blue glitter. Style the hair in a down 'do using lots of blue and silver faux hair jewels and combs. Wear brown mascara on the lashes, light blue shadow on the eyelids and iridescent creme shadow on the brow bones. Use pink creme blush on the cheeks and pinkish lip gloss on the lips.

    Zombie Fairy

    • Create a zombie fairy costume by wearing a red or black corset, or any color corset so long as you can pull and tear at it to make it appear tattered. Wear a short gray skirt; again the color does not matter so long as you can rip it up. Put on tights with lots of holes and borrow a pair of old fairy costume wings that you can also rip and make appear tattered. The hairstyle does not matter so long as it is messy. Wear black chunky boots and dust the face in foundation and powder that is one or more shades lighter than your skin. Put on black mascara, liner and eyeshadow in a sloppy manner to get that "undead" look, skip the blush and wear smeared lipstick of any color. Affix pieces of fake zombie skin and blood purchased from a costume store on the face, arms and chest with makeup adhesive.

    Woodland Fairy

    • Pair a brown leotard with a tulle skirt that hits a little below the knees. The colors of the skirt should be earth-toned, as should the colors of the fairy wings. Leave the legs bare or put on sheer flesh-toned tights. Wear ballet slippers or brown leather Greek-style sandals that lace up the legs. Wear hair down with pieces braided with earth-toned ribbons. Place silk flowers in the hair as well, use snap clips to keep them in place. Sweep earth-toned liner and shadow over the lids with brown mascara and wear pink powder blush and neutral-colored lip gloss. Use gold glitter over all bare body parts.
