Baby's First Haircut Advice
Babies can have hair when they are born or be bald for quite a while, so some babies might even be toddlers before they get their first haircut. The baby's first haircut can be an exciting time for you and something you want to document, but it can be a scary experience for your child.

Readying the Child
-
Prepare the child for the haircut as much as you can. If she is old enough to understand, talk to her about how the stylist will trim her hair, comb it and all of the other things that she should expect. Reassure her that she should be excited for the haircut and not scared at all. If the child is too young to understand, simply run your fingers through her hair and comb it frequently in the days leading up to the haircut to prepare her. If you have a boy, turn on an electric razor or trimmer in front of him to show it to him and get him used to the noise.
Keeping the Child Calm
-
Work to keep your child calm during the procedure. Let him munch on his favorite snack while he gets his haircut or take a portable DVD player or video game with you to keep him occupied and distracted. If you can find a salon that specializes in children's haircuts, take your child there. These salons often have chairs that are shaped like airplanes, trains, cars and horses. Children will want to sit in those chairs, rather than shying away from them.

Documenting the First
-
Don't forget to document the child's first haircut. Take before and after pictures, as well as pictures during the haircut if everything is going well. Ask the stylist to cut a lock of hair for you that you can take with you and place in the baby's scrapbook or baby book.
Choosing a Style
-
Choose a style for your child's first haircut. If you think that the child will likely be uncomfortable during the cut, choose a simple trim. If the child's hair grows naturally over her forehead, consider choosing bangs. An easy cut to style is a simple bob. For a boy, keep his hair a bit longer, or have it cut rather short, like an older boy might wear his hair. Children with naturally curly hair often need simply a trim, as their hair is often easier to style naturally.
