Bastille Day Traditions
On July 14th, 1789 a civilian rebellion stormed the prison (Bastille) in Paris sparking the French Revolution. Bastille Day is the English name for one of the most important national holidays in France. The French refer to it as simply "July 14th" or "The National Celebration." Bastille day commemorates the birth of what the French consider to be their current democratic political system. All throughout France Bastille day is one of celebration, tradition and feasting.

Parade
-
The official Bastille Day parade is held in Paris and begins near the Arc Te Triomphe. It runs down the Champs Elysees and celebrates each section of the military of France. Soldiers, tanks and flags make up the main line of the parade marchers while French military aircraft fly overhead. This is the beginning of the festive day, starting at approximately 10 a.m. The President hosts a special, private, garden party after the parade is over, and French citizens go to their homes and have a large mid-day meal, followed by a nap to energize for later celebrations.
Bal Du 14 Julliet
-
Later in the evening, after the French have feasted and rested, those in Paris head to an open, free event called Bal Du 14 Julliet. This is essentially a dance party with live bands performing outdoors. Each year the party has a different them and party goers arrive in brightly colored costumes.

Fireman Galas
-
Another French tradition on Bastille day is organized and given by the country's firemen. Different firehouses hold demonstrations, parties and dancing. Firemen personnel are asked to stay in their uniform for the duration of the galas.
Fireworks
-
A large fireworks display is given in the evening, usually near the Eiffel Tower. This is not unlike the New York City fireworks over the Hudson river to celebrate the 4th of July. Fireworks are not only held in Paris, all over France cities and towns host their own firework displays and citizens light their own small fireworks as well.
