Armstrong Laminate T-Molding Specifications
Laminate flooring is a popular flooring choice for those looking for a maintenance free floor treatment. The surface of the floor is manufactured from a similar material as the laminate on a kitchen countertop. The flooring installs easily, and required very few specialty tools. The Armstrong laminate flooring product uses a "T" shaped molding to cover seams that often occur between different rooms. Does this Spark an idea?

T-Molding Uses
-
The Armstrong laminate T-molding is designed to cover the seam in the flooring between two different rooms when they meet in a doorway. Each room's floor is installed independently from the next. The floor systems are called a "floating floor," which means they are not nailed to the floor. Rather the pieces of flooring attach to one another, and then they are held against the ground by the molding installed around the perimeter of the room.
When two similarly finished rooms meet, the flooring does not connect between the rooms. The gap is covered by a thin finished trim called "T-molding."
T-Molding Composition
-
The T-molding is manufactured from the same wood composite material that is used to manufacture the floor covering. The composite material is dimensionally stable, and resists shrinking or expanding because of changes in temperature or humidity. The composite material is laminated, or covered over the top of the mushroom-shaped "T" with a wood grain pattern which matches the floor. When installed, the molding blends into the flooring. It features a low profile so that it doesn't create a trip hazard.

T-Molding Dimensions
-
The T-molding comes in pieces which are 72 inches long. In most houses, doorways and arches are between 24 and 72 inches wide. Therefore for the vast majority of installations, a single piece of molding will cover a doorway seam. The molding is only 12 mm tall, and half of the height is recessed into the floor. That means the elevated profile is approximately a half a centimeter tall.
T-Molding Installation
-
The T-molding is shipped with an installation channel. The plastic channel also looks like a T, only with two stems. The flanges on the channel lay on the floor, with the stems pointed upward. The T-molding presses down into the plastic channel. Consequently the T-molding installs without any fasteners driven through the surface of the molding, and it can be easily removed if the floor ever needs maintenance.
