Google Accounts Vs. Google Apps
While Google is primarily known for its search engine service, it also provides a number of other services that you can use for free. To gain access to these services, you need a Google account. Small businesses and organizations can also take advantage of Google Apps.

Google Accounts
-
A Google account is an account that you set up through the main interface that Google offers. When you visit the search engine page, the top right side of the page has an account login link. It is also possible to sign up for an account through this section of the page. To sign up for a Google account, you need a personal email address. Having a Google account allows you to use services such as Gmail, AdWords, Analytics, Voice, Webmaster Tools and Google Buzz.
Google Apps
-
Google Apps is a program that is designed to provide you with access to many of the same applications that you can access with a Google account. The primary difference with this program is that it is designed for groups of people to use in conjunction with one another. For example, if you are an administrator of a school, signing up for a Google Apps account will allow you to create an email address for each one of your employees and to create documents that are shared with everyone.
-
Administered vs. Powered
-
One key difference between Google Apps and Google Accounts is who administers them. With Google Accounts, Google is the one who actually administers the accounts. By comparison, with Google Apps, you get to administer the accounts. With Google Apps, the accounts are powered by Google. For example, your group will see an email interface that looks just like Gmail, but it is on a different domain.
Why Google Apps?
-
If everyone can access Google Accounts for free, you may wonder why anyone would use Google Apps. The primary purpose of Google Apps is to use programs that are functional while branding your own business or organization. This allows you to increase the functionality of your own domain. It also allows your group to work together on projects without having to share the same login at Google Accounts. It is much more collaboration-friendly for groups.
