Colonial Girls
-
During the colonial period, which started after the Puritans landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620 and lasted until the late 1700s, girls wore clothing similar to adults. Upper-class girls wore stays, which were corsets to improve their posture. In the middle of the 1700s, children's clothing became looser and freer. Girls wore an ankle-length dress, with a full or A-line skirt and tights with leather boots. Girl usually covered their heads with white bonnets. An apron sometimes was worn, also.
Colonial Boys

Benjamin Franklin is an example of a colonial man. Boys wore knickers, long-sleeve white shirts and waistcoats, which were like vests. Leather boots or shoes were worn with long stockings. The coats were usually three-quarter length. A hat usually was worn.

Medieval Girls

Medieval girls wore their hair long. The European medieval period was around 1050 to 1540, before the Renaissance. Girls wore clothing similar to adult women and what they wore depended on their social class. A typical girl wore a long dress with a high waist line and long sleeves. A floor-length cloak would be worn during winter. Peasant girls wore baggy tunics or simple woolen dresses. Linen headdresses also were worn, similar to the colonial-era bonnet.
Medieval Boys
-
Castles and knights are associated with the medieval period. Medieval boys wore large tunics with tight pants or stockings. Leather boots were worn, along with a woolen cowl, which covered the head and shoulders. A simple leather belt and a small sword sometimes were added. A wealthy boy would wear a fine silk tunic and a felt hat with a feather.
