Washing Machine Stopped Rinsing

Keep the washing machine door or lid closed to allow for the cycle to complete.

These days, washing machines are expected to do many things, from washing anything from delicate items to large blankets, steam clean items, remove allergens, automatically monitor the soil, water, time and temperature during a cycle and even clean itself. However, when a washing machine won't rinse or has stopped rinsing, owners may feel a little stumped. A little troubleshooting can often help resolve the situation. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Water Valves

    • Take a good look at the water supply for the washing machine, and ensure both the hot and cold water valves are fully turned on. The valves are normally found on the side or in the back of the washer and both should be turned on completely to allow water to flow into the washing machine as needed. The cold water hose (which should be marked) should be connected to the "Cold" valve and the hot water hose (also marked) should be connected to the "Hot" valve. Problems with the rinse cycle are particularly common with the cold water supply, so see that there is nothing preventing the cold water from entering the machine.

    Water Hoses

    • After verifying that the water valves are open, examine the water hoses. Each hose should extend easily from the valve to the washing machine and should not be bent or caught between the washing machine and the wall or any other object. Remove the water hoses from the washer and clean the inlet screens, checking carefully for objects or debris that might inhibit water flow. Connecting each water hose back to the washer, tighten firmly so that water does not leak from the hose.

    Cycle Interruption

    • While stopping a wash cycle to add another item to the load is fairly common, forgetting to restart the cycle is also typical. If the washing machine seems stuck in the cycle and does not rinse, press or select "Start" to resume the cycle. Ensure the door or lid is shut as most washers won't operate otherwise.

    Service Needed

    • If troubleshooting efforts do not restore the rinse cycle, disconnect power to the washer and wait 30 seconds. Return power and select a new rinse and drain cycle. If the problem remains, turn off the washing machine and contact a service professional, as the timer, clutch assembly or water inlet valve may need to be repaired or replaced.
