Boxing referees officiate during boxing matches to ensure that fighters follow all rules and minimize injury. Among their many duties is to give instructions at the start of the fight, decide fouls and issue warnings, signal the end of rounds and determine when to start and stop rounds. Salaries depend on the type of bout, though scales are generally consistent among the different boxing organizations.

  1. Annual Wages

    • The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that as of May 2010, all sports officials, including boxing referees, make a median of $22,840 per year, with a low of $16,310 and a high of $50,350. The highest employment is with local government, with mean wages of $27,420 annually. However, the best salaries are with professional sports organizations, which pay a mean $39,470 annually. Most referees work in the high population state of California, with annual mean wages of $26,700. However, the state with the highest salaries is Michigan at a mean $59,470 annually.

    Gate Receipts

    • Many boxing referees who work regional professional bouts can earn pay per bout based on the gate receipts. The receipts are calculated from the total ticket sales plus any television and video income, minus taxes for the state, pension or neurological funds. The California State Athletic Commission states that as of 2006, the standard referee pay for receipts of $0 to $10,000 was $200. For receipts of $20,000 to $30,00, wages go up to $300, and for a take of $75,000 or more, pay is at $650.

    Minimum Pay

    • Referees can also receive a flat rate per bout, regardless of receipts. For example, for regional championship bouts referees earn $500, as agreed to by the WBA, WBC, IBF, IBO or WBU, among other boxing organizations. For less-recognized world championship bouts, referee pay is $600 as of 2011, as agreed to by the IBA, IBC, WBU or GBU. The highest pay per bout is for recognized world championship bouts sanctioned by the WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO or IBO. Pay runs $1,900.

    Expenses

    • For cancelled bouts, referees receive a minimum pay of $100 plus mileage. The mileage allowance is $0.485 per mile for travel between the referee's residence to the boxing venue. If an event is 100 miles away or more from his residence, then the referee also receives a hotel room and a $25 per day meal allowance. If the official must travel at night, an additional five-mile allowance is added.
