What Do You Wear to a Kids' Sock Hop?
Though the heyday of the sock hop was the 1950s, sock hops are still rockin' around the clock today. For children, sock hops provide a theme for dressing up and dancing to the oldies. Most of today's children are familiar with the clothing of the 1950s, having seen the styles in movies and on TV. It is best to pattern your outfits after the clothing of teens of the 1950s. While there were a variety of styles during the sock hop era, there are a few quintessential costumes for the time period that children are most likely to be familiar with. For ladies, a poodle skirt with a short-sleeved blouse is real hip. Sassier women might wear a pencil skirt or capri pants with a cardigan. Guys who are really with it will wear tan slacks and a sweater vest or a sweater with a white button-up shirt underneath. Or, they might choose to pair a white T-shirt with dark jeans cuffed at the ankles for a tough look.

The 1950s ushered in an era of shorter hair for both men and women. Though some hairstyles were labor-intensive, there are simple ways to style hair for a sock hop. For women, a high ponytail with a scarf tied at the base will stand up well to the rigors of dancing. Shorter hair can be held back with a wide headband. For many gents, slicked-back hairdos with ducktails were popular, while others sported close-cropped flat tops or crew cuts.

Though sock hops got their name from the requirement to take off hard-soled shoes before dancing on the gym floor, many modern sock hops are footwear-optional. If you opt to wear shoes, you will want to make sure they are comfortable for dancing. The classic 1950s shoe is the saddle shoe, but you can substitute plain canvas tennis shoes such as Keds for women and traditional basketball shoes such as Converse for men. Women's shoes should be accompanied by ruffled white socks, and men should wear plain white socks or black dress socks.

Ladies' attire can be dressed up with a string of pearls or accented by a pair of cat's-eye glasses. While a pack of cigarettes rolled in a shirt sleeve is not appropriate for a kids' party, guys can sling black leather jackets over their shoulders, stick combs in their back pockets or wear glasses with black plastic frames.
