In a bad economic climate, many companies and businesses are forced to lay off employees. When a coworker with whom you are friendly gets laid off, consider giving him a gift to help soften the blow and let him know that you sympathize with his situation. Put together a gift basket for the coworker who has been laid off. Going through a time like this can be quite stressful, so consider a relaxing basket filled with bubble bath, massage oil, aromatherapy candles and other items. Another option is a gift basket filled with all of the items needed to create a meal. Not only will this help him save money, it shows that you care.

Practical Item

Losing your job means that you likely need to find another one. Consider choosing a book about searching for a job in a specific industry, or in general. You could also offer to help out with the coworker's resume, cover letter and other things she might need to put together in order to find a new position.
