Plan activities for a 50th anniversary that celebrate the couple's history.

Anniversaries are a reason to celebrate no matter how many years have been achieved. Reaching the 50th mile marker for an anniversary is quite the feat, so you want to plan a fitting celebration. Whether you are organizing a huge surprise party with many family and friends in attendance or just an intimate dinner with a few relatives, planning some activities for everyone to enjoy adds to the occasion. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Memory Lane

    • Fifty years is a long time for family to have accrued memories about the loving couple, so set aside a time for them to share their memories. Gauge how outgoing your family is for how to present this recollection. If you have a gregarious group, have individuals stand up and tell stories. For more low-key participants, set up a decorated poster board or scrapbook where guests can write down fond memories. For larger groups, contact a few key people ahead of time so they are prepared to relive fond times.

    Play a Video

    • No matter how big or small your anniversary event, playing a video about the couple is an entertaining activity. You can feature the collection of memories in several ways, either making it a highlight of the evening or using it as a backdrop for the whole occasion. Fill the video with a photograph collage of the couple, and if you'd like to add more spice, interview friends and family on camera about memories as well.

    Guess the Year

    • Display various photographs of your happy couple throughout the location of the party for a "Guess the Year" game. Set it up silent auction style where people can guess the year and note their name next to it. Choose hilarious photos that mark the passage of time, such as frilly tuxedos from the 1970s. Along with humorous shots, choose significant events in their lives, like when they bought their first home.

    Re-create Part of the Wedding

    • Since an anniversary does mark the celebration of a wedding, re-enact some part of that for the party. Simple ideas include having them cut a cake that looks similar to their original one and feed it to each other or playing music from the year they got married. More complex planning is in store for ideas like renewing their vows with the original minister or gathering their wedding party together and having them show up as a surprise.

    Have a Toast

    • Make sure to tell your loved couple how much they mean to you by toasting them during the occasion. Tell a story or relive a fond memory and thank them for sharing their happy time with you and your family. Congratulate them on the love they have shared with each other for so long as well. Provide everyone with champagne or sparkling cider with glasses to make it official.
