Making crafts and projects out of recycled materials is good for the environment and your pocketbook.

Create your own Halloween costume at home out of recycled materials for a unique and environmentally conscious holiday. Milk cartons are a good choice, as they are made from thick, coated cardboard and are durable. In addition, you can paint, color, adorn, stitch and staple the thick material to meet every creative whim you may have.

  1. King Carton and the Knights of the Round Table

    • Dress as a knight in shining armor for a classic Halloween look. Collect the empty milk cartons at your child's school cafeteria. Make sure to always wash out each carton. Cut the tops and bottoms off the cartons and tape or staple them together to form sleeves for your arms. The remainder of the costume is more complicated, and you will need to open the rest of cartons along the top by unfolding and cutting them down the sides so that each carton lies flat on the ground. Staple them together to form the chest piece, legs and helmet. Cutting the bottom off a gallon milk jug makes a serviceable helmet.

    Christmas for Halloween

    • Christmas is just around the corner from Halloween, so why not bring a little yuletide cheer to your party this year by way of a fun, recycled milk-carton Christmas Tree costume. Determine how long and how wide you want your tree's skirt to be, then start by cutting the small cartons down the sides. For a longer bottom ring, staple quart or half-gallon cartons. Repeat this process, reducing the number and size of cartons as you work your way to the top, until your tree costume is the perfect height for you. Paint the cartons pine green, and wear a Santa hat or a star for the finishing touch.

    Return of the Jug

    • In some stores a Star Wars stormtrooper helmet can cost as much as $80. Yet to make one at home requires little more than two one-gallon milk jugs, hot glue and some black ink as originally shown in the post on FilthWizardry.com. Cut the jugs so that one jug forms the front-bottom or jawbone piece and the other forms the front-top or visor piece and top. Glue the lids to the front-bottom on either side of the spigot for a more true-to-form look. Punch a hole on each back-side piece, and tie string or elastic through to hold the helmet to your head. Color in the necessary places with black ink or paint.

    Carton-ography

    • Instead of using actual milk cartons, perhaps you wish only to take from them inspiration. For a classic costume guaranteed to be a hit, make a milk carton out of a cardboard box. Cut the flaps off the bottom of a box large enough to fit over your body. Cut a hole wide enough to fit your head through on the opposite side. Use the flaps you cut to build a triangle over the hole for your head. The triangle will be the folded top of your milk carton. Cover the box with white paper or white paint. With large markers, construction paper or paint, write "Milk" on the front. Further embellish your costume with other markings usually found on milk cartons, such as brand name, milk fat percent or nutritional information.
