Costume Ideas From "Ghostbusters"

The characters from the 1984 sci-fi classic "Ghostbusters" are iconic enough to inspire recognizable and memorable costumes. For an economical alternative to buying pre-made costumes, use inexpensive materials to create homemade versions. Use Ghostbusters-themed costumes for Halloween, film-themed parties or as a group ensemble costume.

  1. Ghostbusters

    • Wear a khaki-colored Air Force flight suit, a canvas pistol belt and Army-style black boots that reach mid-calf. Wear a black shirt under the flight suit and wear black volleyball elbow pads and knee pads over the jumpsuit. Cinch the waist with the pistol belt and wear black latex protective gloves over the hands. Sew or iron an embroidered name badge on the left chest of the flight suit and "no ghost" logo badges to each shoulder.

    Slimer

    • Wear an extra-large hooded sweatshirt and a pair of slim fitting pants or stockings in a matching shade of Kelly green. Wear a down vest or a padded life jacket under the sweatshirt to mimic Slimer's round belly. Apply green face paint to your entire face and wear yellow contact lenses to create Slimer's eyes. Insert a set of false hillbilly-style teeth with yellow teeth that are set far apart into your mouth.

    Sta-Puft

    • Wrap your entire body with foam padding and secure it with duct tape to create a Sta-Puft costume. Pad the arms, legs and midsection separately to allow for movement. Wear large white pants and a long-sleeved white shirt that are large enough to fit over the padding. Use elastic bands or transparent cable ties to divide the sections of the arms and legs, so they appear to be stacks of marshmallows. Wear a sailor's hat, bib and gloves. Apply white face paint to the entire face and use black face paint to draw exaggerated semi-circular eyes on the face. Tuck excess hair into the hat or paint it white with aerosol hair paint.

    Ghostbusters Logo

    • Cut holes for your eyes and mouth out of a white sheet and put this on over slim-fitting black pants or tights. The key to the costume is the big red "no circle" that sits around the ghost. Create the icon -- a circle with a diagonal line through it - with bright red card stock. The holes on either side of the diagonal line must be large enough to fit your body. Step into the bottom half of the circle, bring it up around your waist and slide your head and right arm through the top half. The diagonal line will sit over the left shoulder like a seat belt.
