The stories feature four young owls that go on a quest.

"Guardians of Ga'Hoole" is a series of fantasy books written by Kathryn Lasky for young readers. Set in a magical forest, four young owls seek training with a legendary group of owls called the Guardians of Ga'Hoole to help fight the evil in their midst. A movie based on the books was released in 2010 and has since become a popular theme for children's parties. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Decorations

    • No theme party would be complete without decorations. Turn your party room into a forest by creating giant cutouts of trees from cardboard. Decorate them and place the trees throughout the party space. Add owl decals or owl posters to the walls. Use some "beanie baby" owls to decorate the table and use them later as prizes. Or consider holding the party outdoors. Because owls are nocturnal, you might stage the party outside by lantern light or use torches to light the party area.

    Food

    • Owls subsist mainly on a diet of insects and small rodents but this is hardly the type of food you would want to serve at a party. Make owl-themed snacks and treats that look like the kind of food owls would eat. Serve your guests gummy worms and decorate mini cupcakes to look like mice by adding gumdrop ears and licorice tails. Or bake owl-shaped cookies and brownies; you could also purchase a mold shaped like an owl to make a birthday cake.

    Games

    • Fill an owl-shaped pinata with candy or put a spin on an old classic by playing "Pin the Beak on the Owl." Because owls are nocturnal, you might adapt some of your favorite party games to be played in the dark, such as hide-and-seek or tag. Compile some facts from the books to write up trivia questions beforehand. Award prizes to those who get the most correct answers.

    Crafts

    • Set up a craft table and lead everyone in an activity for making owl finger puppets. Cut out two round pieces of felt with pointed ears. Use fabric glue to adhere the pieces and then decorate them to look like owls. Simple paper lunch sacks can also be turned into owl puppets by turning the bag upside down and gluing cutouts of pointy ears to the top of the base, eyes to the middle section and a beak at the bottom center.

    Party Favors

    • Finish your Guardians of Ga'Hoole party off right by sending your guests home with owl-themed party favors. For treat bags, use small paper lunch sacks and draw the outline of an owl on the front or add an owl sticker. Fill a treat bag with gummy insects, owl-shaped chocolates and small owl figurines.
