What Kind of Jobs Should Children Receiving Allowance Get?
Many parents allow their children to do chores around the house to earn a little extra money. Giving children an allowance teaches them about work ethic and how to manage money. When assigning chores to a child, parents must decide which ones are appropriate for their child's age.

Pet Care
-
Smaller children can be assigned to feed their pets under parental supervision. Parents must watch over them to ensure they aren't giving their pets too much or too little food. Older children can be trusted with more responsibility with pets in the household. They can take their dogs for walks, clean fish tanks and change their cat's litter boxes.
Housecleaning
-
Parents can assign older children housecleaning chores. These children can vacuum the carpet, dust furniture, wash dishes, scrub floors and clean windows. Younger children can be assigned simple housecleaning chores under parental supervision. For example, they can help their parents put dishes in the dishwasher or clear the table after dinner. Younger children can also be instructed to put their toys away after playing with them.

Cooking
-
Older children can make dinner for the family a couple nights a week. They can prepare the meals and clean up afterwards. Younger children can help their parents with preparing dinner by setting up the table while their parents cook. Parents can teach their younger children simple cooking methods, such as how to stir noodles in a pot or how to peel a potato.
Laundry
-
Younger children can be responsible for gathering and separating their own laundry. When their clothes are washed, they should fold and put away their clothes. Older children, who know how to operate a washer and dryer, can wash their own clothes. Children who get comfortable with doing their own laundry at an early age will be better off when they move out on their own.
Yard Work
-
Children can help their parents keep the yard clean by raking leaves, picking up sticks and mowing the lawn. Older children can clean the yard without parental supervision, while younger children need their parents to watch over them.
