The Kindle DX with 3G connectivity debuted in 2009.

In July 2010, Amazon introduced its the third generation of its Kindle wireless reading device. By the end of the year, it earned the spot as the best-selling product in Amazon's history. The third-generation Kindle is available in two models that can be used with or without 3G coverage. In addition, Amazon offers a Kindle model that can be used only with 3G coverage.

  1. Kindle Overview

    • Amazon offers three models of the Kindle including the 6-inch Kindle with Wi-Fi, the 6-inch Kindle with Wi-Fi and 3G (Kindle 3G) and the 9.7-inch Kindle with 3G (Kindle DX). Each version holds up to 3,500 ebooks and uses a high-contrast electronic ink (E Ink), glare resistant display. Kindle books are downloaded from Amazon's Kindle store which can be accessed via Wi-Fi or a 3G network. Amazon also includes an "experimental" Web browser to Kindle customers to allow them to do more with their devices than read books.

    Kindle DX

    • The Kindle DX is Amazon's largest -- and most expensive -- ebook reader. The Kindle DX measures 10.4 inches high by 7.2 inches wide with a 9.7-inch screen. At 18.9 oz., the device also weighs twice as much as the Kindle and Kindle 3G. Size is not the only difference between the Kindle DX and the other models. The Kindle DX is the only model to offer only 3G connectivity. It is not compatible with Wi-Fi networks; therefore to use the Kindle DX you must be able to access a 3G network.

    Whispernet

    • Amazon uses the Whispernet wireless network to offer free 3G coverage to Kindle DX customers. Whispernet coverage in not available in all areas. When looking at Kindles, it is important to know if Whispernet works in your location. Amazon does not assess monthly fees for using Whispernet nor does it require you to sign a contract. However there may be some fees associated with using the network for transferring personal documents and other services.

    Other Kindle Models

    • The other Kindle models include the standard Kindle and the Kindle 3G. The standard Kindle supports Wi-Fi access, but not 3G access while the Kindle 3G supports both. To use either of these models, you can take advantage of a home or work-based wireless network or a Wi-Fi hotspot. The Kindle will detect and automatically connect to available Wi-Fi networks. In some cases, a password or manual connection may be required. Similar to the Kindle DX, the Kindle 3G can also connect -- at no charge -- to the Whispernet network.
