Talented & Gifted Telecommunication Grants
Telecommunications grants are offered by government agencies to improve telecommunications in rural areas. Federally-funded telecommunications projects range from broadband accessibility in rural areas to the upgrade of public television stations to comply with digital transmission requirements. Scholarships and academic awards are also available for telecommunications education and training.

Siemens' Advanced Placement and Technology Competition Awards

Several electronics, technology and engineering companies provide competitive grants to telecommunications students. Siemens runs a foundation that funds telecommunication grants. The Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology awards cash prizes of $10,000 to $100,000, as of August 2011, to high school students who demonstrate remarkable talent and commitment to the fields of math, science and technology. Siemens also provides Advanced Placement (AP) awards for students who earn the highest score of 5 on AP science and math exams. Students may only win the national or state prizes once, but recipients of the state prize may later qualify for the national prize as well.
Telecommunications-Industry Scholarship Programs

Cable TV and broadband providers offer scholarships to students interested in the industry. Telecommunications companies also offer grants and scholarships to telecommunications students. Charter Communications offers a scholarship for telecommunication students who are graduating high school students, Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and be residents of Minnesota, Wisconsin or Illinois. Academic record, community service, extracurricular activities and a 250-word essay about future goals are some of the criteria for this award. AT&T, another telecommunications company, also provides student scholarships. The Wisconsin State Telecommunications Foundation helps individuals obtain training and education to improve and develop their scientific capacities through its grant program.

College/University Telecommunications Grants and Awards

College and university telecommunications departments offer scholarships and grants to their students. Ball State University (BSU) in Indiana offers the David Letterman Telecommunications Scholarship to its students, as well as as the Molly Dailey Telecommunications Internship Fund, which includes a cash award. BSU also offers the John Eiden Radio Scholarship, the Morry Mannies Sportscasting Scholarship and the Steve Bell News Packaging Award.
Telecommunications awards are also available at Pennsylvania's East Stroudsburg University. It offers a Media Communication and Technology Scholarship, in addition to computer science and technology grants.
Bowling Green State University also has telecommunications grants. These include an outstanding student award, a telecommunications talent scholarship, an alumni-student development fund and a School of Media and Communications Scholarship for Excellence.
USDA Rural Development Telecommunications Grants

The Rural Development Department within the U.S. Department of Agriculture offers several telecommunications grants. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 Broadband Initiatives Program and the Community Connect Broadband Program both support expansion of broadband services into rural areas. The Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant provides funding for improvement of distance learning and health-care facilities in rural areas. The Rural Utilities Service Weather Radio Program funds the installation of new transmitters into rural areas to assist the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Radio system. The Public Television Digital Transition Grant provides funds to Public Television Stations serving substantial rural populations to assist with the transition to digital broadcast television transmission, as mandated by the Federal Communications Commission. This grant may be used for installation and procurement of software necessary for the transition in addition to associated engineering and environmental studies.
