Anime Watcher Scholarships

Anime differs from manga in that manga is a printed art and anime is a film art.

Anime, short for animation, constitutes a form of Japanese film art globally popularized throughout the 1980s and 1990s and made legitimate to Western audiences by the likes of Hayao Miyazaki. Anime watchers may seek scholarships from various sources, all depending on what the individual anime fan depends on studying. None of these scholarships exist exclusively or even specifically for anime watchers, though the knowledge accrued through watching anime may help qualify individuals for these awards.

  1. Scholarship Fields for Anime Watchers

    • Watching anime prepares students for studying in a variety of fields, many of which offer scholarships. Most obviously, fields with scholarships for anime watchers include Japanese language, literature and culture studies, film studies, film school, media studies and communications. Film school differs from film studies in that the former emphasizes film as an academic field and the latter focuses on creating film. These fields contain numerous scholarships, particularly the field of Japanese language, literature and cultural studies. Other potential fields of studies for anime watchers with available scholarships include art/drawing, film animation, screenwriting and general cinema studies.

    Scholarship Sources for Anime Watchers

    • Scholarships for anime watchers come from a myriad of sources. In many cases, schools hosting programs in fields, such as film studies, media studies, communications, animation and screenwriting award scholarships to students. Respectively, schools awarding scholarships in each field include Arizona State University, The New School, Purdue University, San Francisco Art Institute and the UCLA School of Film, Theater and Television. Organizations, such as New York Women in Communications, the ASCAP Foundation and the Cartoonists League of Absurd Washington also provide scholarships suited to anime watchers.

    Scholarships for Japanese Studies

    • A huge number of scholarships exist for those studying Japanese language, culture and literature. These scholarships run a wide gamut, from those created exclusively for students intending to spend time studying at a school in Japan to those reserved for individuals taking intensive programs in Japanese language studies. Awards in the field include those provided by Freeman-Asia, the Consulate General of Japan in the United States, Japanese government education and cultural exchange initiatives and foundations such as Association for Asian Studies, Abe Fellowship Program and Atsumi International.

    Scholarship Amounts for Anime Watchers

    • The amount of scholarships available to anime students varies depending upon the reason for the scholarship and the source providing the scholarship. Scholarships awarded by schools may cover a small portion of costs or the total cost of tuition and required fees. Schools with prominent departments in fields related to anime generally provide more money for such scholarships than schools that focus on other fields and marginalized programs in film, Japan, media and communications. As a general rule, college scholarships run from as little as $500 to full tuition, a cost as much as or in excess of $40,000, in 2011. Scholarships for anime watchers studying in Japan range from $1,000 for a year to ¥80,000, or approximately $1,044 per month for as many as 12 months as of 2010.
