Although the whale swallowed Jonah, the Lord helped him escape.

Sunday school children or your own children will enjoy learning the story of Jonah and the whale. Create a fun, simple craft to help them understand the story and give them something to remember or take home, or create a Jonah and the whale craft to decorate your own home. A simple whale craft can serve as a reminder that God loves us and helps us when we listen to Him, just as He helped Jonah get out of the whale.

  1. Three Dimensional Crafts

    • Children will enjoy making three-dimensional whale crafts. Create a whale out of a paper bag, balloon or papier-mache. Paint or decorate your whales as desired. Use an action figure to represent Jonah, or draw or print out a picture of Jonah on a piece of paper. Children can hide their Jonah inside this whale and rescue him later. If making a balloon or papier-mache whale, be sure to hide Jonah inside before inflating or painting. (Remember that broken balloon pieces are a choking hazard for young children.)

    Paper Jonah Cratfs

    • If space or time is at a premium, a simple paper Jonah craft can be done in minutes. Children can color pictures of Jonah inside a whale. You can tape a paper flap over Jonah so children can lift the flap to reveal Jonah. For another simple craft, have children draw or paste pictures of Jonah and the whale on a paper plate. Help them cover the plate with a layer of blue plastic wrap to give the drawing an underwater appearance. Even very small children can do these coloring crafts.

    Sewn Jonah Crafts

    • There are several more durable Jonah and the whale crafts you can create. Sew a stuffed whale using a simple whale template or pattern, and attach a small sewn figure of Jonah to it via ribbon. Sew a flap on the whale's belly so children can play placing Jonah under the flap when he is in the whale and then remove him. This also makes a good reusable prop for Sunday school lessons. Sewers can purchase needlepoint or cross stitch patterns to make a Jonah and the whale hanging. Sew Jonah bean bags children can toss into an empty milk jug decorated like a whale.

Edible Jonah and the Whale Crafts

    • Bake a whale-shaped cake or several cupcakes decorated with a whale's face to serve while learning about Jonah and the whale. For an added touch, bake a Jonah figurine or small candies inside the cake or cupcakes to represent Jonah. You can also decorate half of the cupcakes like whales and use icing to draw Jonah on the other half. For a less sweet treat, serve cups of goldfish crackers, and have each child fish like Jonah for their goldfish using a pretzel smeared with peanut butter.
