What Should You Do After You've Settled on an Idea for an Essay to Write?
If you have ever agonized over a topic for an essay, finally came up with a killer idea, but found yourself unable to actually write anything at all, you've had Writer's Block. Although it can feel like you are drowning in mental quicksand when you have Writer's Block, the good news is that you don't have to settle on being stuck. Because you've actually settled on an idea, you can start from there when you begin writing your essay.
-
Write It All Down
-
Without bothering with technicalities or outlines first, jot everything you know about your topic down on a piece of paper. Phrases, keywords, additional ideas -- you name it. Once you see what you know, you will not only be amazed, but you will have created the perfect starting point for your essay because this exercise will allow you to start organizing your thoughts.
Outlining
-
After you jot down everything you know about your topic, arrange what you know according to how you would want it to appear in your essay. Decide on your main points for every one or two paragraphs, including their sub-points. Keep your writing style simple and direct and avoid writing "fluff" or unnecessary sentences.
-
Expanding
-
If you think your paragraphs look empty or short, expand them by analyzing your points, what you wrote or facts that are popular or new. If it is a personal essay, your analysis is what should make your paper unique. Discuss your thoughts about the idea and make sure that it is written in a way that can be understood by readers, as coherency is a must when you are writing.
Other Tips
-
When you write, don't put too much pressure on yourself. When you burden yourself unnecessarily, it can be hard to think and write. Research your material well, and when you use direct quotations, make sure that you cite your sources because plagiarism is a no-no. Finally, check your grammar, look out for typos and reread your essay at least two times before submitting it.
