What Is Glue in Firefox?
Glue, a browser add-on for Firefox, keeps track of your browsing habits and preferences. When you browse certain websites -- popular encyclopedias, bookstores, music stores or movie sites, for example -- Glue pops up to recommend products or topics that might interest you. Glue has a social networking element, as it allows you to see which items your friends have visited and recommended as well.
-
How It Works
-
You must first download the Glue add-on and install it in Firefox. You also need to register an account with GetGlue. When you view an item -- a book, artist or trading stock, for example -- on a Glue-enabled site, the Glue add-on's toolbar will drop down from the top of the page with an overview of the item and various actions you can take.
General Actions
-
From the Glue menu, you can choose actions such as giving the item a thumbs up or thumbs down; leaving your "2 cents" -- a comment; seeing the item on a different website; looking for reviews; comparing prices; searching for similar items; or following Glue's recommendations to find related items that might interest you.
-
Social Actions
-
Glue also has a range of social and sharing options that you can select. While on an item's page, you can share the item on social networking sites such as Facebook, see which other Glue users have visited the same item and whether they liked it, and follow Glue users who like the same things as you. If a Glue user you're following follows you, you can become friends. If a friend has commented on a website, Glue can show you his comments, and you can add your voice to the discussion.
Glue and Other Networks
-
Glue allows users to link their Glue accounts with other social networking sites including Twitter and FriendFeed. Glue also lets you register using your Facebook account. Combining Glue with other social networks means you can follow people you already know from those networks and find recommendations based on what they enjoy. It also makes growing your Glue network easier: The more friends you have on Glue, the more recommendations you will see.
Stickers
-
Glue's virtual stickers are given as rewards when you accomplish certain things on the Glue network. Some are awarded for logging in on a certain day at a certain time, visiting particular sites, or downloading and listening to certain songs, for example. Others are awarded for more mysterious accomplishments that you must figure out yourself. You can redeem virtual stickers for real stickers, which are mailed out to Glue users who request them.
