Who Qualifies for the Georgia HOPE Grant?

The state of Georgia has an educational scholarship and grant program known as Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally, or HOPE. This program awards both scholarships and grants to Georgia students and is funded entirely by Georgia's Lottery for Education, according to the GA College 411 website, a service of the Georgia Student Finance Commission.

  1. Qualifications

    • The Georgia HOPE grant is available to Georgia residents who are attending a college or university within the state. They do not need to be full-time students. All applicants must "be making satisfactory progress" in their academic program, but otherwise do not have to meet any high school graduation date or grade point average requirements.

    Ineligibility

    • Some people are ineligible for a HOPE grant if certain factors are present. A student who has already earned a baccalaureate degree, or one who has received a HOPE grant scholarship for more than either 65 semesters or 95 quarters is ineligible to receive further grants. Also, any person who received a payment from a combination of a HOPE grant, HOPE scholarship or Zell Miller scholarship through the summer term, totaling 127 semester (190 quarter) hours of credit is not eligible to receive a HOPE grant, according to the gacollege411 website.

    Application

    • Eligible students can apply for a HOPE grant in one of two ways. The first is to complete a "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" form, or FAFSA. The second is to apply for the HOPE grant directly. You must obtain an application form by visiting the gacollege411.org website. The site allows you to fill out an application electronically or print out a form and mail it.

    HOPE Scholarship

    • Students may also be eligible for a HOPE scholarship, a separate program apart from the HOPE grant. Hope scholarships are available to students who have demonstrated academic excellence and who wish to earn a college degree. Students can qualify for a HOPE scholarship by meeting one of five requirements: graduate from a HOPE-eligible high school with a 3.0 GPA, complete a HOPE-eligible home study program with a 3.0 GPA, graduate from an ineligible high school and score at the 85th percentile or higher on the ACT or SAT tests, graduate from an ineligible high school and earn a 3.0 GPA for 30-semester hours of coursework in a college, or earn a 3.0 GPA after 30-semester hours of college coursework regardless of your high school graduation status.
